Pinctada Pearl Productions present: Lady and Seeds We Bury
Topper Theater
For the 2024–2025 Social Justice Documentary Class, the student-run production company Pinctada Pearl Productions is thrilled to share the powerful stories of the families, community leaders, and youth we met in the Philippines—Boracay and Halian—and the Shinnecock Indian Nation.
This year, our stories center the voices of those who fight for climate justice and the sovereignty of their land—individuals and communities who remind us that protecting the earth is inseparable from protecting culture, identity, and future generations.
In Boracay and Halian, we explored the impact of tourism, development, and environmental degradation on Indigenous and island communities, hearing firsthand from Ati elders, local leaders, and youth about their efforts to reclaim ancestral land, preserve their ecosystems, and sustain traditional ways of life. Their resilience and creativity in the face of displacement and ecological loss reveal the strength of grassroots resistance.
With the Shinnecock Indian Nation on Long Island, we learned about the community's fight to protect sacred burial grounds and advocate for sovereignty, environmental justice, and the wellbeing of their youth. Their voices remind us that history lives in the land, and preserving it is an act of survival.
Through these stories, we aim to amplify underrepresented voices and challenge viewers to reflect on the deep connections between land, identity, and justice.
